Piriformis Syndrome – Nicole Gillett

Piriformis syndrome is a very common thing with a lot of people that sit for long periods of time. Piriformis syndrome is what happens when the piriformis muscle is compressing the sciatic nerve. The cause of this syndrome can be the course that the nerve runs by the muscle, inflammation of the muscle, over use injuries, posture, and trigger points (what I mentioned in my last entry). Most common cause in men is from sitting on their wallet, take the wallet out of the pocket and it will usually resolve its self. In women the most common cause is from sitting cross-legged. The pain can sometimes start in the lower back and as it progresses down the affected sides leg. Stretching the piriformis muscle is one of best ways to help resolve the issue. Massage is very beneficial in helping stretch out the muscle and surrounding muscles of the leg, it can be painful just like any massage but it will be worth the little pain to be able to walk and sit normally again.
