Massage Therapy and Office Workers

Massage Therapy and Office Workers

Author: Nicole Gillett, RMT, Adica Massage Clinic, Fredericton

Over the past four and a half years of being a RMT, I have seen many different types of clients as well as clients with different occupations. The most common occupation is office workers, which means working on a computer, and sitting at a desk for the better part of their day. Our bodies aren’t made to sit all day as most people do, so as the day goes on and we start to get tired and worn out, your postural muscles in your back, neck and chest start to get sore or tired from sitting so long.

As these muscles get tired we begin to “slouch” to get comfortable and to make it through the day, which puts stress on certain muscles and parts of your body. You usually end up leaning forward – putting stress on your lower back, and as you lean forward your shoulders round forward which lengthens your muscles in your upper back and shortens your chest muscles. If your chest muscles become so tight and shortened this can eventually affect your breathing if severe enough. Getting a  Massage on a regular basis is VERY helpful with not just relaxing your body and mind but for working out a lot of these problem areas so no health issues occur with them. But there are other things you can do on your own: setting an alarm on your computer for every 30 minutes to get up and walk around to stretch your legs, and you can also very easily stretch right at your desk. When you get home it is awesome to take hot baths with Epsom salts or apply heat to the areas then stretch them out.  You’ll get more from stretching if muscles are already warmed up.

At Adica Massage Clinic we offer various types of massages including: therapeutic massage, sports massage, couple’s massage, hot stone massage, pregnancy massage and even 4 handed massage.
